Three Fabulous Fashion Icons from the Big Screen

If someone were to ask you what kind of movies you enjoy watching, you might say action movies, science fiction or comedy. You probably wouldn’t say, “I like watching movies that feature well-dressed men.” Unless, of course, you were a bespoke tailor in Dallas at Edward Baumann Clothiers.

We confess, we can’t help but notice the fashion statements that Hollywood’s leading men make in the movies. Their wardrobes – from chic evening wear to rugged leather – help to flesh out the character being portrayed on the Silver Screen. Film fashions have also had an impact on consumer culture and men’s off-screen style.

3 Film Icons that Inspire Style

If you are ever looking for some fashion inspiration, you may want to consider these stylish characters, drawn from The Short List’s roundup of the 30 most stylish film characters

  1. James Bond
    • It doesn’t matter whether you prefer Sean Connery or Daniel Craig, 007 knows how to dress. Even Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore had a look that was to-die for when they took on the legendary character. “Since the Sixties, men’s style has changed dramatically. Successive youth cultures have combined to gradually relax the rules of formal attire and revolutionise how chaps dress. And yet, perversely, arguably the most stylish man on film in the last 50 years is one that is governed by the conventions of yesteryear. His name? Bond. James Bond. If you don’t find his elegance utterly bewitching then you’re probably a hipster bore. Or a Goth But not both,” the folks a The Short List say.
  2. Jim Stark (James Dean’s character in Rebel Without A Cause)
    • When it comes to casual cool, it’s hard to beat James Dean in his most iconic performance. “To this day, Stark’s ‘uniform’ – jacket, white T-shirt and jeans – denotes classic outsiderdom,” The Short List says.
  3. Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep)
    • “Gentlemen; if you’re weary of the contemporary preference for all things ‘dude’ –and aspire to be a ‘proper’ man: rugged, silent, funny, tough and possessed of a magnetic appeal to members of the opposite sex, take our advice: watch Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep. That is all. Just watch and learn,” is the advice from the Short List. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

And, if you want a little help transforming that inspiration into a look all your own, contact Edward Baumann Clothiers, the go-to destination in Dallas for custom suits, custom men’s jeans and more bespoke custom products.

What Does the Best-Dressed Superhero Wear?

It is usually easy to spot the best-dressed man in the room, right? He’s the one wearing a custom-made suit and he’s wearing it with confidence and style. But when it comes to superheroes, they all have custom-made suits, right? (Just not the kind you’ll find here at Edward Baumann Clothiers, the destination for bespoke tailored suits in Dallas.)

Apparently, we are not the first ones to ponder the xx and xx of superhero style.

Superhero Chic

The folks over at Vanity Fair deemed the question of which superhero is the best-dressed worthy of discussion a couple of years ago. “Batman without his mask is just a man dealing with orphan issues, and Catwoman without her suit is just a burglar: it’s the clothes that separate these heroes from villains,” they pointed out. (Which is superhero speak for “the clothes make the man.”)

Their top 10 list of best-dressed superheroes included:

  • Iron Man (The magazine dubbed him “science-fiction’s answer to Savile Row.”)
  • Blossom
  • Black Widow
  • Superman
  • Batman
  • Kim Possible (The magazine says, “Her signature combination of harem-cargo fatigues with a black cropped turtleneck suggest a Michael Kors spin on Indiana Jones.”)
  • Catwoman
  • Invisible Woman (A lesson for those of you working from home – even though she can’t be seen, this superhero takes care with her appearance.)
  • Spider-Man (“Nothing less than the latest smart fabrics for the king of geek chic,” Vanity Fair quips.)

At Stylecaster they not only put together a list of the best-dressed superheroes, they went a step further and called others out with their worst-dressed superhero list. “Just because superheroes take on evil powers (and give us endless inspiration for Halloween costumes) doesn’t mean they’re perfect. Sure, some (like Batman) clean up quite nicely, but others (like The Hulk) are in desperate need of a makeover,” they say.

Their best-dressed list is topped by:

  • Batman
  • Silk Spectre II
  • Wonder Woman

At the top of Stylecaster’s worst-dressed list of superheroes you will find:

  • Robin
  • The Hulk
  • The Fantastic 4

These days, it takes superpowers just to get through the week. So, if you’re rising above it all and sticking up for the little guy (and little gals, too), you deserve your own custom men’s suit to celebrate your heroic efforts. And our bespoke tailor in Dallas can help you design one that will put you at the top of any best-dressed list.

Do Neck Gaiters Offer Safety? And Style?

Neck gaiters are not something you would normally see the preeminent bespoke tailor in Dallas commenting on. But, as we all know only too well, these are not normal times.

In fact, here at Edward Baumann Clothiers, your first destination for custom-made men’s suits in Dallas, we have received quite a number of inquiries reading gaiters. You could say that we are up to our necks in questions about neck gaiters. There is one question that really does need attention, however.

Is it ok to wear a neck gaiter as opposed to a cloth facial covering or disposable face mask?

In reporting on a study done at Duke University, the Washington Post said, “In a recently published study, the researchers unveiled a simple method to evaluate the effectiveness of various types of masks.” The study evaluated quite a wide variety of face coverings, including N95 respirators and bandanas. “Of the 14 masks and other coverings tested, the study found that some easily accessible cotton cloth masks are about as effective as standard surgical masks, while popular alternatives such as neck gaiters made of thin, stretchy material may be worse than not wearing a mask at all.”

As you can imagine, there has been more than a little blowback – not just from folks who love to wear gaiters but also from other scientists, as NPR reported.

Among those saying more research needs to be done is Dr. Vicente Diaz, who specializes in ocular inflammatory and infectious diseases at Yale Medical School. “He says while Duke’s study provides a good starting point, there are many other factors to consider in assessing gaiters — such as testing circumstances and the specific gaiter used.”

“What they found was that when the subjects were talking for 10 minutes, [gaiters] seemed to allow particles [spewed by the wearer] to break up and even spread faster,” Dr. Diaz told NPR. “But that may be a function of the material used as well as the design of the face covering.”

As we so often say, the fabric and the fit make all the difference. That’s as true with custom jeans as it is with bespoke custom suit – and now, apparently, face masks and neck gaiters.

Will Summer Bring a Return to Normal… Style?

Normally, by now our bespoke tailor in Dallas would have produced an array of sophisticated custom-made men’s suits perfect for warm-weather wear. Of course, there is very little that is normal about life these days.

But there is hope! Things are starting to re-open and people are tentatively emerging from their isolation, blinking in the sunshine of a summer day like adorable little creatures emerging from their burrows.

And, after months of sweatpants and old T-shirts (It might feel like years, but it has only been a matter of months since we heard a news report that didn’t feature Covid-19 prominently.), people all across this great land are ready to put on real clothes and pay attention to their appearance once again.

Huzzah! (Which is our way of saying that we are looking forward to seeing you again soon.)

Summer Style Trends

Summer style trends were, of course, established long before we were told to stay home in order to stay safe and prevent the spread of Covid-19. But many of the looks on display at Men’s Fashion Week back in January and February seem appropriate for these strange new days.

“Designed and produced well before the pandemic, optimistically patterned shirts and oversized shades are in high supply this season,” the style pros at  GQ magazine note.

After months spent indoors, those shades will definitely come in handy as you emerge from your lair. And really, who couldn’t use a dose of optimism right about now?

There were also many nods to nostalgia, which we may find comforting as uncertainty continues to dog our every step.

Among the 10 Top Fashion Trends from Men’s Fashion Week S/S 2020 that the Trendspotter picked up on at Fashion Week, were:

  • Oversized Blazers that pay homage to the ‘80s were seen on the runways. “Whether it be a pinstripe or something one color, this is a great way to put a retro spin on a modern outfit without looking too formal,” Ally Feiam of the Trendspotter says. “Pair it with a basic T-shirt or a funky button-down and jeans, and you’re going to be strutting down every street in style.”
  • High Waisted Trousers reminiscent of the 1940s are “a flattering style that comes back into fashion every few years, due to its versatility.”
  • Flared trousers and jeans will have anyone who has fond memories of the ’70s smile! “With a thin upper leg and an exaggerated ankle, these trousers are sure to make an impact anywhere you go.”

If you didn’t hold on to your favorite flares, fear not! We can create a pair of custom jeans that will be even better than the ones you remember.

Looking Good for Mother’s Day

It may have snuck up on you this year, which is completely understandable given the current circumstances, but take it from best bespoke tailor in Dallas and a true arbiter of taste, a pandemic is no excuse for letting things slide on Mother’s Day.

In fact, as one of the wardrobe consultants available to help you find the ideal custom-made men’s suit pointed out on a recent Zoom gathering, the pressure may be even higher to deliver a memorable Mother’s Day this year.

Gift Ideas for the Woman Who Stole Your Heart

Fortunately, your friends at Edward Baumann Clothiers have your back (and we know how to make it look its best in a tailored suit or Dallas’s finest custom jeans!)

If you would traditionally take your lady out for a family brunch or romantic dinner on Mother’s Day, you are not off the hook just because social distancing makes that impossible. If you don’t think you’re up to cooking a special meal for her (with or without the assistance of the kids) and scaring up a couple of candles, then it’s time to order curbside pickup – from her favorite restaurant.

With all the family togetherness associated with the Covid-19 quarantine, she would probably be extremely grateful for a little alone time. Give her a basket of scented bubble bath and lotions and tuck that new book she’s been wanting to read in for good measure, then round up the kids and the dog and head out for a nice LONG walk or a drive. If it’s not possible to get the little ones out of the house, just make sure you keep them happily occupied and away from mom until she emerges from her refuge.

Of course, we think she might also appreciate seeing you in something other than your sweats or your favorite pair of old jeans – maybe something like a bespoke custom suit or maybe a custom dress shirt with a well-fitting pair of custom men’s jeans.

Let’s See Your Spring Style, Gentlemen

It may not feel like your typical spring season (because it definitely is not!). Nevertheless, spring has arrived, and it is time to freshen up your wardrobe. You don’t need to order a closet full of custom-made suits in order to breathe new life into your look (although, the best bespoke tailor in Dallas is at your service, if you would like to).

Enough with the grey sweats and the glum faces. Think color, think fresh and lighten up a little bit. Let spring remind you that there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Spring Style Refresh

Your chic custom-made men’s suits may be hanging in the closet while you work from home, but just because you aren’t hitting the streets of Dallas in a tailored suit, doesn’t mean you can’t look like you mean business.

Spring is always associated with green growing things, flowers in bloom, birds singing their little heads off – you get the idea. It’s a time for rebirth and renewal.

Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking about what comes next:

  • How about a new pair of custom jeans in a lighter shade of blue paired with your favorite button-down shirt for a look that is appropriate for both the season and the home office?
  • If you’re slipping on a sport coat for those virtual business meetings, you could add a pop of bright spring color with a pocket square or keep the color to yourself with a colorful pair of socks.
  • Whether you’re wearing dress slacks or custom men’s jeans on the bottom, slip on a new custom dress shirt in one of the season’s hottest colors or in a classic pattern.

If you would like some advice on either spring trends or classic seasonal looks, please contact us. At Edward Baumann Clothiers, your headquarters for men’s custom suits in Dallas, we would love to help you.

Should You Wear a Tie with Your Tailored Suit?

Not surprisingly, here at Edward Baumann Clothiers, where the custom-made men’s suits, custom jeans and customer service are all exceptional, we are often asked questions about men’s fashion trends.

After one of the recent debates among the many Democratic presidential nominees, someone came in with a question. During the debate, philanthropist and entrepreneur Andrew Yang kicked off a heated controversy. It wasn’t what he said, it was because of what he was wearing – or to be precise, what he wasn’t wearing: a necktie.

Are Neckties on the Way Out?

The simple answer is, no. But make no mistake, neckwear has evolved. Not every office job requires that men wear a tie, but there are situations where a tie is absolutely appropriate. And there are also situations where the right tie will set you apart from the crowd.

After that presidential debate, Philadelphia Magazine asked some executives what they thought about neckties. We love the answer that Ajay Raju, chairman and CEO of Dilworth Paxson LLP, came up with. “Insofar as neckties are worn with suits, they’ll never die,” he told the magazine. “The suit and tie is eternal; it’s men’s fashion at its zenith. Sophisticated cockroaches will be wearing suits and ties after a nuclear apocalypse. It’s an ensemble that does something unique. It both conveys and commands respect. A suit says, ‘I accept that a situation demands formality and conformity,’ while a conscientiously chosen ties says, ‘But I’m still going to express myself.’ If you’ve got a decent form and/or a decent tailor, you can’t go wrong with a good suit.”

We are proud to offer a selection of distinctive ties worthy to be worn with a bespoke custom suit from Dallas’s Edward Baumann Clothiers, including:

  • Dion Neckwear
  • Dolcepunta Ties
  • Robert Talbott Ties

The casual dress code adopted by the tech industry has influenced men’s fashion, but – whether you’re wearing men’s custom jeans or a custom suit crafted by the best bespoke tailor in Dallas – a well-dressed man will always command attention and respect.

Thank Beau Brummel for Stylish Custom-Made Suits

The gentlemen who wear custom-made men’s suits from Edward Baumann Clothiers, the most sought-after bespoke tailor in Dallas, understand that a fashion fad is not at all the same thing as style.

There are celebrities who are known for their style – like John Legend, who isn’t afraid of prints or color, but who can often be seen sporting a monochromatic look with accessories that hit just the right note. But when it comes to men’s style icons it’s hard to imagine anyone that has had more influence than Beau Brummel, the 19th century fashion-forward friend of the heir to the British throne.

As History.com reports, “In the 19th century’s first decade, George Bryan “Beau” Brummell dominated the London social scene, changing the course of men’s fashion in the process. Born into a wealthy family, Brummell’s sense of fashion and wit were enough to gain the friendship and patronage of the Prince of Wales (the future George IV).”

The First Man of Fashion

It is hard to overstate the influence Beau Brummel has had on men’s fashion. As the online style guide He Spoke Style says, “There is one man who stands alone as the forefather of men’s style. The father of dandyism. The man who introduced the suit and tie. That man is none other than George Bryan Brummell, better known as Beau Brummell.”

As History.com tells us, Brummel frowned on the gaudy colors and overdone looks that men favored in the 18th century. Brummel preferred to step out in something like a double-breasted riding coat and boot-tucked trousers. Clean lines and a restrained color palette appealed to him. “His style caught on, evolving into the muted 19th and 20th-century men’s business suit,” the experts at History.com say.

Just imagine what Beau Brummel would think of modern menswear if he were alive today! There are definitely fashion trends that we think would have him raising a critical eyebrow, but he would undoubtedly be right at home in the lounge or fitting rooms at Edward Baumann Clothiers, where the best-dressed men in Dallas go for fine custom suits.
