Do Neck Gaiters Offer Safety? And Style?

Neck gaiters are not something you would normally see the preeminent bespoke tailor in Dallas commenting on. But, as we all know only too well, these are not normal times.

In fact, here at Edward Baumann Clothiers, your first destination for custom-made men’s suits in Dallas, we have received quite a number of inquiries reading gaiters. You could say that we are up to our necks in questions about neck gaiters. There is one question that really does need attention, however.

Is it ok to wear a neck gaiter as opposed to a cloth facial covering or disposable face mask?

In reporting on a study done at Duke University, the Washington Post said, “In a recently published study, the researchers unveiled a simple method to evaluate the effectiveness of various types of masks.” The study evaluated quite a wide variety of face coverings, including N95 respirators and bandanas. “Of the 14 masks and other coverings tested, the study found that some easily accessible cotton cloth masks are about as effective as standard surgical masks, while popular alternatives such as neck gaiters made of thin, stretchy material may be worse than not wearing a mask at all.”

As you can imagine, there has been more than a little blowback – not just from folks who love to wear gaiters but also from other scientists, as NPR reported.

Among those saying more research needs to be done is Dr. Vicente Diaz, who specializes in ocular inflammatory and infectious diseases at Yale Medical School. “He says while Duke’s study provides a good starting point, there are many other factors to consider in assessing gaiters — such as testing circumstances and the specific gaiter used.”

“What they found was that when the subjects were talking for 10 minutes, [gaiters] seemed to allow particles [spewed by the wearer] to break up and even spread faster,” Dr. Diaz told NPR. “But that may be a function of the material used as well as the design of the face covering.”

As we so often say, the fabric and the fit make all the difference. That’s as true with custom jeans as it is with bespoke custom suit – and now, apparently, face masks and neck gaiters.

Hot Under the Collar

Has the summer heat gotten to you yet? Between heat, humidity and the occasional tropical storm or hurricane, July can be a tough month. Instead of a custom-made men’s suit or even a pair of comfortably broken-in custom jeans, there are days when all you want to do is put on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt.

When business calls, shorts and a T-shirt might be pushing it – even if it is casual Friday. Fortunately, there are summer styles that won’t leave you hot under the collar.

Looking Cool in the Summer

This is not the time for a winter-weight black suit – even if it is a custom suit from Dallas’ leading bespoke tailor.

If the situation calls for a suit, Brian Cornwell, who offers some tips on how to keep your cool while looking good on the website NextLuxury, suggests you consider a light grey suit “crafted in wool and linen with double vents on the rear to swoosh air up the back. Throw in a hot-climate friendly lining for good measure.”

The thought of wool might have you thinking of warm sweaters, but summer weight wools may be your best friend when Mother Nature turns up the heat. “Unlike lightweight linen, it hides wetness and manages the wrinkles better,” Cornwell says. “The reality is that wool is super absorbent, not to mention quick drying; two things you really need in the summer time.”

If your wardrobe is lacking a suit designed to keep you comfortable in the summer heat, the wardrobe consultants and bespoke tailor at Dallas’ Edward Baumann Clothiers can help with a  custom-made suit made from a Cool Wool. Also known as a summer-weight wool or tropical wool, this fabric features an open weave, which facilitates air flow.

In addition to our distinctive custom suits, we can also give a boost to your summer wardrobe with a stylish custom-made sport coat or a cool, comfortable custom shirt.

Can Face Masks Be Safe and Stylish?

This year, the most important item in your wardrobe probably isn’t going to be a bespoke custom suit or even a pair of custom men’s jeans. The most important thing you will be wearing for the foreseeable future is a face mask.

Fortunately, when it comes to face masks, there is a lot more information currently available. You’ll also find, you have a lot more choices when it comes to the kind of mask you wear.

In fact, The Gap worked with medical experts to put together a guide for face mask safety and style that has lots of easy to understand information. We turned to their guide for some basic info to help get you started.

Should You Be Looking for an N95 Face Mask?

No. N95 masks and other medical grade masks are still in short supply and should be left to the medical professionals who truly need them. An N95 mask is designed to help protect them from breathing in dangerous germs. The exhaust port – the little bump you see on the N95 mask or the little vent you might see on other masks – allows you to breathe out freely. It does not filter the air you exhale.

As Nick Dawson, Co-Founder of the Emergency Design Collective and Former Executive Director of Innovation at Kaiser Permanente, explains, “What we’re really trying to do is keep our breath, our spittle from aerosolizing and potentially infecting someone else.” In other words, avoid masks that have an exhaust port. “They are not as good for what we need right now in this public health emergency.”

What Features Should You Look for in a Face Mask?

Dawson recommends getting something comfortable, particularly if you’re going to need to wear your mask for a long period of time. “If you’re going to be out and about, if you’re going to be interacting, even if you’re going to be exercising with a mask on, your incentive to keep it on is really closely tied to comfort,” he says.

We haven’t had any requests for custom face masks – yet, but we expect it’s only a matter of time before our customers come into our unique location in Dallas for custom suits, men’s custom jeans and coordinating custom face masks.

Will Summer Bring a Return to Normal… Style?

Normally, by now our bespoke tailor in Dallas would have produced an array of sophisticated custom-made men’s suits perfect for warm-weather wear. Of course, there is very little that is normal about life these days.

But there is hope! Things are starting to re-open and people are tentatively emerging from their isolation, blinking in the sunshine of a summer day like adorable little creatures emerging from their burrows.

And, after months of sweatpants and old T-shirts (It might feel like years, but it has only been a matter of months since we heard a news report that didn’t feature Covid-19 prominently.), people all across this great land are ready to put on real clothes and pay attention to their appearance once again.

Huzzah! (Which is our way of saying that we are looking forward to seeing you again soon.)

Summer Style Trends

Summer style trends were, of course, established long before we were told to stay home in order to stay safe and prevent the spread of Covid-19. But many of the looks on display at Men’s Fashion Week back in January and February seem appropriate for these strange new days.

“Designed and produced well before the pandemic, optimistically patterned shirts and oversized shades are in high supply this season,” the style pros at  GQ magazine note.

After months spent indoors, those shades will definitely come in handy as you emerge from your lair. And really, who couldn’t use a dose of optimism right about now?

There were also many nods to nostalgia, which we may find comforting as uncertainty continues to dog our every step.

Among the 10 Top Fashion Trends from Men’s Fashion Week S/S 2020 that the Trendspotter picked up on at Fashion Week, were:

  • Oversized Blazers that pay homage to the ‘80s were seen on the runways. “Whether it be a pinstripe or something one color, this is a great way to put a retro spin on a modern outfit without looking too formal,” Ally Feiam of the Trendspotter says. “Pair it with a basic T-shirt or a funky button-down and jeans, and you’re going to be strutting down every street in style.”
  • High Waisted Trousers reminiscent of the 1940s are “a flattering style that comes back into fashion every few years, due to its versatility.”
  • Flared trousers and jeans will have anyone who has fond memories of the ’70s smile! “With a thin upper leg and an exaggerated ankle, these trousers are sure to make an impact anywhere you go.”

If you didn’t hold on to your favorite flares, fear not! We can create a pair of custom jeans that will be even better than the ones you remember.

Custom-Made Suit and Tie Not Required for These Events

The custom-made jeans you were planning to wear to the big concert next weekend can stay in the closet. And there’s no need to have your custom-made suit from Edward Baumann dry cleaned for the splashy annual fundraiser your firm sponsors. Thanks to Covid-19, your calendar is more open than it has been in years.

Galas and gatherings have been cancelled or postponed. Art museums have closed their doors. Theaters are dark, the curtain has come down on the opera and the symphony, and all the ballet dancers are making a point to stay home.

But, while you might not be able to use those tickets you had purchased for the concert or show, you can still enjoy an array of Dallas’s finest art and entertainment.

Enjoy Virtual Events and Offerings

Musicians, magicians, actors, rock groups and other artists as well as museums, theaters and other cultural organizations around the globe have been offering virtual experiences – many at absolutely no cost – to a world in quarantine. Dallas’s treasure trove of arts and entertainment venues are no exception.

So, whether on your own or with the family, make plans to enjoy these and the many other virtual tours and happenings available in Dallas:

  • Dallas Comedy House is offering a variety of online classes, including comedy classes, podcasting classes and more.
  • You can browse the Dallas Museum of Art’s 25,000 works of art and find additional resources online at DMA at Home. And that’s just for starters. The museum also invites you to experience the Speechless: different by design exhibition in 3D or enjoy a virtual tour of Flores MexicanasWomen in Modern Mexican Art, an exhibition on view only for the second time in nearly a century, and For a Dreamer of Houses
  • The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is taking their music online! Check out their Facebook  or YouTube page to listen in.

Visit Dallas has even more virtual events and opportunities that won’t require you to dress up in your bespoke custom suit from Edward Baumann. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a tailored suit in Dallas’s virtual arts entertainment arena.

Looking Good for Mother’s Day

It may have snuck up on you this year, which is completely understandable given the current circumstances, but take it from best bespoke tailor in Dallas and a true arbiter of taste, a pandemic is no excuse for letting things slide on Mother’s Day.

In fact, as one of the wardrobe consultants available to help you find the ideal custom-made men’s suit pointed out on a recent Zoom gathering, the pressure may be even higher to deliver a memorable Mother’s Day this year.

Gift Ideas for the Woman Who Stole Your Heart

Fortunately, your friends at Edward Baumann Clothiers have your back (and we know how to make it look its best in a tailored suit or Dallas’s finest custom jeans!)

If you would traditionally take your lady out for a family brunch or romantic dinner on Mother’s Day, you are not off the hook just because social distancing makes that impossible. If you don’t think you’re up to cooking a special meal for her (with or without the assistance of the kids) and scaring up a couple of candles, then it’s time to order curbside pickup – from her favorite restaurant.

With all the family togetherness associated with the Covid-19 quarantine, she would probably be extremely grateful for a little alone time. Give her a basket of scented bubble bath and lotions and tuck that new book she’s been wanting to read in for good measure, then round up the kids and the dog and head out for a nice LONG walk or a drive. If it’s not possible to get the little ones out of the house, just make sure you keep them happily occupied and away from mom until she emerges from her refuge.

Of course, we think she might also appreciate seeing you in something other than your sweats or your favorite pair of old jeans – maybe something like a bespoke custom suit or maybe a custom dress shirt with a well-fitting pair of custom men’s jeans.

Let’s See Your Spring Style, Gentlemen

It may not feel like your typical spring season (because it definitely is not!). Nevertheless, spring has arrived, and it is time to freshen up your wardrobe. You don’t need to order a closet full of custom-made suits in order to breathe new life into your look (although, the best bespoke tailor in Dallas is at your service, if you would like to).

Enough with the grey sweats and the glum faces. Think color, think fresh and lighten up a little bit. Let spring remind you that there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Spring Style Refresh

Your chic custom-made men’s suits may be hanging in the closet while you work from home, but just because you aren’t hitting the streets of Dallas in a tailored suit, doesn’t mean you can’t look like you mean business.

Spring is always associated with green growing things, flowers in bloom, birds singing their little heads off – you get the idea. It’s a time for rebirth and renewal.

Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking about what comes next:

  • How about a new pair of custom jeans in a lighter shade of blue paired with your favorite button-down shirt for a look that is appropriate for both the season and the home office?
  • If you’re slipping on a sport coat for those virtual business meetings, you could add a pop of bright spring color with a pocket square or keep the color to yourself with a colorful pair of socks.
  • Whether you’re wearing dress slacks or custom men’s jeans on the bottom, slip on a new custom dress shirt in one of the season’s hottest colors or in a classic pattern.

If you would like some advice on either spring trends or classic seasonal looks, please contact us. At Edward Baumann Clothiers, your headquarters for men’s custom suits in Dallas, we would love to help you.

What Should You Wear When Working from Home?

Here at Edward Baumann in Dallas, our men’s custom suits are always in high demand, but not every occasion calls for a tailored suit, especially in Dallas. We have always had clients who work from home. Now that working from home is a necessity for most of us, we can learn from them and all the others who have mastered the art.

Working from a home office takes some getting used to, and it might take an adjustment in your wardrobe, too. You won’t need to wear your favorite bespoke custom suit (unless you want to, of course!), but sweats shouldn’t be your first choice, either.

The New Dress Code

What you wear not only makes an impression on others, it influences the way you feel about yourself. That’s why you should try to resist the temptation to spend the day in sweatpants.

Mason Donovan, author of The Golden Apple: Redefining Work-Life Balance for a Diverse Workforce, told Fast Company, “Although a dress code may seem silly when you think about working from home, work clothes impact you on a business and personal level and can affect your career.”

Donovan is not alone. “Researchers Joy V. Peluchette and Katherine Karl conducted a study that was published in Human Resource Development Quarterly, and found that participants reported feeling more authoritative, trustworthy, and competent when wearing formal business attire,” Fast Company reports.

It’s easy to understand why dressing professionally, from the waist up at least, is important if you will be participating in video conferences and calls. But what can sporting a well-fitting pair of slacks and a custom-made shirt do for you when no one sees you? A lot!

  • Business attire can help you focus. “Clothes can act as a reminder, dragging you mentally into work mode,” Donovan told Fast Company. “If you’re wearing dress clothes, you will be far less likely to do chores. Clothes can pull you away from tangents that try to pull you away mentally.”
  • Dressing professionally can influence your productivity. Wearing that custom-made suit from Edward Baumann not only makes you look like a million bucks it also makes you feel like you’re on top of the world. And it’s not just you, research has shown that dressing well can make you feel more confident and competent.

Edward Baumann may be best known for our bespoke custom suits, but we offer our clientele a choice of garments, that also includes custom jeans, shirts and sport coats as well as custom boots and shoes and a range of accessories, so you’ll be ready for whatever life brings. If we can do anything to help you stay focused and positive during this difficult time, please contact us.

What Does a Custom-Made Plaid Suit Say About You?

As you probably know, here at Edward Baumann Clothiers of Dallas, for a custom suit – or any custom garment – the most important element is fit. But once one of our two master tailors has carefully taken your measurements, the exciting process of selecting a fabric for your bespoke custom suit starts.

There are a lot of factors that will go into selecting the best fabric for your new custom-made suit or sport coat. Will you be wearing the suit in the winter or spring? Is your new tailored suit for a Dallas social event or for work? And, of course, personal style is paramount.

There are certain occasions that call for a classic black or blue suit, but the rest of the time, the tone your menswear sets is up to you.

Why We Love Plaid for Custom-Made Suits

Plaid offers a classic feel while still leaving you with a lot of room for self-expression.

“Technically, plaid isn’t the pattern’s proper name,” Smithsonian Magazine points out. “That honor goes to the word ‘tartan,’ which was first used to describe the individual colors and patterns used to decorate the clothes of different Scottish clans.”

If you’ve ever traveled to Scotland, you can probably understand how each of the ancient clans developed its own unique tartan. Each clan would rely on the weaver in its own remote region. Those weavers would be limited in terms of the colors available to them, which were often made from vegetable dyes, by the local resources.

“Plaid only replaced tartan once the patterns became popular with British and American textile manufacturers who would recreate fabrics that looked like tartans, but without centuries of symbolic meaning embedded in their clothing,” Smithsonian Magazine says.

“Whatever the color and context, it seems like plaid is one pattern that may never go out of style,” Smithsonian Magazine says.

So, the next time you’re ready for a new custom suit from Dallas’ own Edward Baumann, be sure to ask your wardrobe consultant about the possibilities of plaid.
